While iObit’s AMC Security-Protector app sports a number of features and scans for malware on your Android, its core security offering is weak and some of it was nonfunctional in testing.

Keeping your Android phone secure isn’t just about slapping a case on it. Android antivirus software keeps nasty apps and exotic exploits from seizing control of your phone. It also helps you secure and recover lost or stolen devices and keeps you safe while you browse the wilds of the Internet. With AMC Security-Protector, Booster, IObit promises it will do all of those things, and much more. But my testing found that it fell short on many accounts. AMC, if you are wondering, stands for Advanced Mobile Care, a name the app fails to live up to.

Interface and Pricing
Security apps are not known for their quality design and pleasing interfaces. IObit, however, looks very handsome on my Nexus 6 ($219.00 at Amazon) . More security companies should look to its design for inspiration. Unfortunately, the beauty is only skin deep. The app isn’t laid out logically, and it offers very little explanation of its features. Worse, text reads as if it has been poorly translated into English, to the point that it hampered my ability to use the app in testing.

IObit AMC Security-Protector, Booster is available as a free download from the Google Play store. Most of its core features are available for free, but a Pro account (which is what I tested) is available for $9.99 per year. The Pro account adds scheduled optimization scans, auto updates of virus definitions, additional theft-prevention tools, a secure vault, and protection from phishing sites. The developers also promise that a Pro account provides «more support and peace of mind,» but after using it, I disagree.

For an Android security app, $9.99 per year could be a pretty good deal. Editors’ Choice Bitdefender Mobile Security and Antivirus costs $14.95 per year, and others can cost much more than that. However, Avast Mobile Security and Antivirus is also an Editors’ Choice and is absolutely free.

I find it very odd that automatic virus definition updates are a paid feature. True, you can update them manually for free, but I have never seen another android security app make you pay for this capability. It seems like a rather cynical move to place this feature behind a paywall, and one that might actually affect the user’s protection.

Antivirus Scans
Triggering a malware scan on IObit requires you to dive through a few menus. Once you find the right page, you’ll see that you have two scan options: Fast Scan and Deep Scan. Fast Scans averaged 2.8 seconds in my testing, while the Deep Scan looks over every file on your phone and took, on average, 18.4 seconds. Both tools appear to ignore some files that the app has already scanned. For you, this means scans in IObit might take longer the first time you run them, but they should be much faster every time afterward.

Mobile gamers won’t have to worry about IObit slowing down their play. With a dozen apps running, plus an antivirus scan, I saw no stuttering or lagging while playing Minecraft. However, I didn’t like that IObit suddenly redirected me back into the app once it finished its scan.

IObit also scans every file as soon as it’s downloaded to make sure nothing sneaks onto your phone. To test it, I downloaded the EICAR app from the Google Play store. This app is harmless, but it is detected by antivirus vendors as malicious for testing purposes. Seconds after it downloaded, IObit flagged the app as malicious. A handy pop-up gave me the option to delete it immediately, or add it to an ignore list.

Of course, this test just confirms that the antivirus app is doing anything at all. To really test the efficacy of an antivirus app, I turn to the experts at independent research labs. Unfortunately, IObit is not included in the battery of tests performed by AV-Test and AV Comparatives. However, representatives from IObit confirmed that the company actually licenses the Antiy AVL antivirus engine, which is tested by the third party labs.

In its latest report, AV-Test found that Antiy AVL successfully blocked 99.8 percent of 3,336 pieces of malware. However, a representative of AV-Test pointed out that, as always, there is no way to guarantee that the licensed technology works as well as the original.

My contacts at AV-Test also informed me that IObit improperly included a logo in the app that indicated that it was verified by AV-Test. Companies that license an engine can use the AV-Test logo, but only if the final product is evaluated by AV-Test. This is a minor issue, but it doesn’t inspire confidence. Neither do accusations that IObit stole virus definitions from Malwarebytes.

Theft Protection
While mobile malware is scary, if you stick to downloading apps from Google Play it’s very unlikely that you’ll ever encounter it. In fact, the biggest threat to your phone is probably sticky-fingered thieves. To help keep you safe, IObit includes tools to remotely secure, locate, and wipe your phone.

In my testing I was only able to get one of these features to work. By sending a special SMS command to my phone, I was able to lock the screen and trigger a 93db alarm. To shut off the alarm, I had to enter my code. There is no way to lower the alarm’s volume, and I am pleased to say there is also no way to circumvent the IObit lockscreen.

The rest of IObit’s theft protection tools did not work as well. To remotely locate your phone, you need a second Android phone with IObit installed. You enter the phone number of your other phone, the one you want to locate, along with the security passcode you’ve already established. IObit then generates a special code, which you send through your default text messaging app. The process is the same to trigger a remote wipe.

The problem is that, in my testing, these codes didn’t do anything to my test phone. It simply received the text messages and went about its business.

These outcomes are in stark contrast to what I’ve experienced testing most other Android security apps. Other developers also provide SMS commands as a backup, and use a Web portal to remotely trigger anti-theft tools. I’m also disappointed that, unlike Kaspersky Internet Security and many other Android security apps, IObit doesn’t include the option to lock your phone if a thief replaces the SIM card. Lookout Security and Antivirus goes even further and captures a photo of the thief. IObit doesn’t even match the free protection provided by Google’s Android Device Manager. I would sooner use it, than IObit for securing and recovering a lost device.

I reached out to IObit about my experiences with the antitheft features. Company representatives suggested that my phone may have been misconfigured. Even if this were the case (and I couldn’t find any evidence of it), the app certainly failed to inform that I wasn’t protected. Security needs to be far more user-proof than this.

Web Protection
Just because you’re on a mobile device doesn’t mean you’re automatically protected against Web-based attacks or phishing sites designed to steal your login credentials. To protect you online, IObit includes the Anti-Phishing and Surfing Guard tools. The former requires the installation of a plugin, and the latter says it supports only the default browser and Google Chrome. I’d like to see this expanded to include other browsers like Firefox, Opera, and others.

But it might be a moot point because I wasn’t able to determine if IObit’s Web protection and Anti-Phishing tools actually do anything. Using the repository of phishing sites at Phishtank, I navigated to ten recent phishing sites. IObit flagged none of them. The company says that their antiphishing is very new and will improve over time. I prefer functional tools to those that underperform and over-promise.

Call and SMS Blocking
With a text message, an attacker can spread spam links, prompt victims to install malicious software, or worse—as we saw with the Stagefright vulnerability. Also, it’s just plain annoying to get junk text messages. For all these reasons, many security apps include call and SMS blockers.

Unfortunately, most SMS blocking tools stopped working on Android after version 4.4, and IObit is no different. It can block calls, however. Blacklisted callers will hear half a ring before dumping them to voicemail. You also have fine-grained control over how IObit blocks calls. For example, you can set it to only allow calls from your list of approved numbers and your address book. That should stop most spam callers in their tracks!

When you receive a call, IObit pops up its own screen to let you answer, decline, or blacklist the caller. Unfortunately, it popped up on my phone after I dismissed the call. That’s not very useful.

Extra Features
The trend in mobile security apps has been to go big or go home, with developers offering more and more tools along with the core slate of antivirus scans and theft protection. IObit is positively packed to the gills, so I’ll only run through the most pertinent features here.

Included in the app are tools like Battery Saver, Privacy Locker, Privacy Advisor, and App Manager. All worked as expected, though Privacy Locker is worth highlighting. It lets you move sensitive files, like photos and videos, into a sequestered part of the IObit app—definitely useful for fans of sexting.

IObit also includes something it calls Payment Guard, which is meant to look for copycat payment apps and protect financial transactions in the background. Like much of the descriptive text in the app, the explanation is vague and I wasn’t sure what, if anything, this tool was doing.

Despite what you’d expect, the core function of IObit is to improve your phone’s performance by removing extraneous files and shutting down apps and background processes. When you tap the large Scan button on the home screen, the app tracks down apps to shut down and cache files to sweep away. When I ran it, the app found a surprising 1.39GB of files to be cleaned up.

I don’t perform in-depth tests on extra features like Battery Saver, but even in my limited examinations I saw some behaviors that I didn’t like. For example, IObit creates an extra shortcut on the desktop to its cleanup tool without your permission. The app also includes a preselected slate of apps you can download, another move I dislike. Qihoo 360 Security does it, too. To IObit’s credit, it doesn’t always create shortcuts without your consent. Sometimes, it asks first.

Steer Clear
IObit AMC Security-Protector, Booster includes several tools, many of which appeared to work as advertised. It also appears to have licensed excellent antivirus technology, which might keep you safe from Android malware. But that’s where the good news stops. IObit’s phishing and Web protection appear ineffectual at best and nonexistent at worst. Worst of all, its anti-theft tools are difficult to use, and they were mostly nonfunctional in my testing.

With so many paid and free security apps for Android currently available on Google Play, there’s no reason to install IObit—let alone pay for it.
